Petroleum demand slips further in July

August 17, 2012
Source: API

Total U.S. petroleum deliveries (a measure of demand) fell 2.7 percent in July to just above 18 million barrels per day. This is the lowest July level since 1995 and the lowest level for any month since September 2008. Total petroleum demand for the year to date was down 2.3 percent.

Gasoline demand fell more, down 2.2 percent from June and down 3.8 percent from July a year ago to the lowest July level since 1997. Demand for other major products also declined except distillates, which increased 4.9 percent, driven by strong ultra-low sulfur diesel deliveries.

“While retail sales for July are up and housing has improved, the weak petroleum demand numbers are a strong indication the economy is still faltering,” said API chief economist John Felmy. “Unfortunately, achieving robust growth will likely continue to be an uphill climb given the nation’s fiscal challenges, business uncertainty, and a European economy in jeopardy of sliding back into recession.”

Despite weakening petroleum demand, refinery production remained strong. At nine million barrels per day, gasoline production reached its third highest July level. Distillate production at nearly 4.8 million barrels per day was at a record high for any July and the third highest monthly level ever. Year-to-date distillate production also set a record. Total refinery inputs grew by 2.3 percent in July to the highest level this year.

Production of all four major products – gasoline, distillate, jet fuel and residual fuels – was greater than demand for those products. As a result, petroleum imports decreased and exports increased. Total imports of crude and refined products fell by 9.6 percent to average 10.4 million barrels per day in July. Exports of refined products increased to a record high for July, and year-to-date exports were up 14 percent compared with the same period in 2011.

Refinery utilization rose to 92.7 percent in July, the second month in a row above 90.0 percent.

Crude oil production remained strong and was up from the prior month, prior year and prior year to date. At 6.225 million barrels per day, it was the highest level of domestic production for any July since 1998.

The number of oil and gas rigs decreased from 1,972 in June to 1,944 in July, according to the latest reports from Baker-Hughes, Inc., and has stayed under 2,000 for all of 2012.

Crude oil stocks were up 5.1 percent from last year, but down 4.3 percent from June levels to end in July at 365.8 million barrels. Stocks of all major products were down from last year’s levels. Gasoline and distillate stocks were both up in July compared with the month before.

API represents more than 500 oil and natural gas companies, leaders of a technology-driven industry that supplies most of America’s energy, supports 9.2 million U.S. jobs and 7.7 percent of the U.S. economy, delivers more than $86 million a day in revenue to our government, and, since 2000, has invested over $2 trillion in U.S. capital projects to advance all forms of energy, including alternatives.

LAS MARRAMUCIAS DEL TARJETON ELECTORAL

tomado de un amigo,
11 hours ago via Conduit ·

THE AMERICAN DREAM. EL SUENO AMERICANO.

NEW YORK – America likes to think of itself as a land of opportunity, and others view it in much the same light. But, while we can all think of examples of Americans who rose to the top on their own, what really matters are the statistics: to what extent do an individual’s life chances depend on the income and education of his or her parents?

CommentsNowadays, these numbers show that the American dream is a myth. There is less equality of opportunity in the United States today than there is in Europe – or, indeed, in any advanced industrial country for which there are data.
CommentsThis is one of the reasons that America has the highest level of inequality of any of the advanced countries – and its gap with the rest has been widening. In the “recovery” of 2009-2010, the top 1% of US income earners captured 93% of the income growth. Other inequality indicators – like wealth, health, and life expectancy – are as bad or even worse. The clear trend is one of concentration of income and wealth at the top, the hollowing out of the middle, and increasing poverty at the bottom.
CommentsIt would be one thing if the high incomes of those at the top were the result of greater contributions to society, but the Great Recession showed otherwise: even bankers who had led the global economy, as well as their own firms, to the brink of ruin, received outsize bonuses.
CommentsA closer look at those at the top reveals a disproportionate role for rent-seeking: some have obtained their wealth by exercising monopoly power; others are CEOs who have taken advantage of deficiencies in corporate governance to extract for themselves an excessive share of corporate earnings; and still others have used political connections to benefit from government munificence – either excessively high prices for what the government buys (drugs), or excessively low prices for what the government sells (mineral rights).
CommentsLikewise, part of the wealth of those in finance comes from exploiting the poor, through predatory lending and abusive credit-card practices. Those at the top, in such cases, are enriched at the direct expense of those at the bottom.
CommentsIt might not be so bad if there were even a grain of truth to trickle-down economics – the quaint notion that everyone benefits from enriching those at the top. But most Americans today are worse off – with lower real (inflation-adjusted) incomes – than they were in 1997, a decade and a half ago. All of the benefits of growth have gone to the top.
CommentsDefenders of America’s inequality argue that the poor and those in the middle shouldn’t complain. While they may be getting a smaller share of the pie than they did in the past, the pie is growing so much, thanks to the contributions of the rich and superrich, that the size of their slice is actually larger. The evidence, again, flatly contradicts this. Indeed, America grew far faster in the decades after World War II, when it was growing together, than it has since 1980, when it began growing apart.
CommentsThis shouldn’t come as a surprise, once one understands the sources of inequality. Rent-seeking distorts the economy. Market forces, of course, play a role, too, but markets are shaped by politics; and, in America, with its quasi-corrupt system of campaign finance and its revolving doors between government and industry, politics is shaped by money.
CommentsFor example, a bankruptcy law that privileges derivatives over all else, but does not allow the discharge of student debt, no matter how inadequate the education provided, enriches bankers and impoverishes many at the bottom. In a country where money trumps democracy, such legislation has become predictably frequent.
CommentsBut growing inequality is not inevitable. There are market economies that are doing better, both in terms of both GDP growth and rising living standards for most citizens. Some are even reducing inequalities.
CommentsAmerica is paying a high price for continuing in the opposite direction. Inequality leads to lower growth and less efficiency. Lack of opportunity means that its most valuable asset – its people – is not being fully used. Many at the bottom, or even in the middle, are not living up to their potential, because the rich, needing few public services and worried that a strong government might redistribute income, use their political influence to cut taxes and curtail government spending. This leads to underinvestment in infrastructure, education, and technology, impeding the engines of growth.
CommentsThe Great Recession has exacerbated inequality, with cutbacks in basic social expenditures and with high unemployment putting downward pressure on wages. Moreover, the United Nations Commission of Experts on Reforms of the International Monetary and Financial System, investigating the causes of the Great Recession, and the International Monetary Fund have both warned that inequality leads to economic instability.
CommentsBut, most importantly, America’s inequality is undermining its values and identity. With inequality reaching such extremes, it is not surprising that its effects are manifest in every public decision, from the conduct of monetary policy to budgetary allocations. America has become a country not “with justice for all,” but rather with favoritism for the rich and justice for those who can afford it – so evident in the foreclosure crisis, in which the big banks believed that they were too big not only to fail, but also to be held accountable.
CommentsAmerica can no longer regard itself as the land of opportunity that it once was. But it does not have to be this way: it is not too late for the American dream to be restored.

EEUU CON 430 MIL MILLONES DE BBLS DE RESERVA!

TERREMOTO PETROLERO EN PUERTA PARA LA OPEP/OPEC. LEAN  ESTO!

Refer a Friend to Energy and Capital.

Bad News for OPEC
By Jeff Siegel | Thursday, August9th, 2012
According to the Department of Energy, up to 430 billion barrels of recoverable oil lay right herein the United States.
Exactly how much oil is this?
It's...
2x more than all the reserves of Saudi Arabia
6x more than Mother Russia
More than Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, and Canada combined!
All of which makes it even harder to understand why we're still dependent on any one of these countries for ouroil.
The truth is it's not because of politics... but simply because this oil istoo difficult to extract.
You see, most people are surprised to learn that when it comes to crude, oil companies typically recover only the"low-hanging fruit": just 10% to 20% of the oil in proven reserves.
That's it. The rest is either too difficult or too costly to extract.
Think about that: Up to 90% of proven oil is simply abandonedby profit-hungry oil companies!
Now just imagine what it would mean if these companies could finally get to all this "leftover" oil.
